The night that Pierre Laporte was murdered I was driving taxi in Vancouver. I learned of his death from a passenger telling another passenger of his death.
After that I heard a siren behind me. I thought, The police are moving fast. But the police car passed me.
At the end of my shift I walked home on the streets of downtown Vancouver. The next day's edition of the Vancouver Province was already displayed in the coin boxes. The headline was The Crime is Treason, The Punishment is Hanging.

Later, Penny or another person, told me of her experience in jail. She was held with a number of other detainees. At least one was detained because of a personal relationship with a man active in politics.
They were allowed to watch television. At some they saw a news item about demonstrations in the US against the War Measures Act. These were emergency demonstrations, not large at all, thrown together by the Socialist Workers Party. Penny's fellow detainees were impressed when she was able to name a handful of the demonstrators.
