This is all the more important at the moment when the USA has broken with its Iran treaty in an overt and illegal effort to overthrow the elected government of Iran. Thanks to Chicago ALBA supporters for raising this point. The article they are discussing originated as a talk to a Toronto socialist group whose members are familiar with the need to defend Iran. However, socialists more broadly are divided on this question. This urgently needs discussion. More practically, we must build an effective movement to defend Iranian sovereignty against these attacks.

For instance, “Should socialists defend subordinate capitalist countries that run afoul of imperialism and come under attack? Consider Iran.” But then you say nothing else about it. By saying nothing more than “consider” it, you give the impression that you are unclear how the decisions of the early Communist International are relevant. That is a missed opportunity, as the great majority of groups calling themselves Marxist today, whether they be CPs, Maoists, Trotskyists have such un-Marxist,liberalish, even neo-con views on Iran.
