John Riddell’s articles on the past always help to illuminate present issues and struggles. ‘How socialists of Lenin’s time responded to colonialism’ is very much relevant to Britain today. Many arguments have been advanced by British left groups about whether or not the so-called ‘United Kingdom’ (Britain plus Northern Ireland) should remain in the EU. Although the referendum on the UK’s place in the EU is only two months away, virtually all the left groups in this country have ignored the Irish question. This is lamentable, since the British state has never allowed the Irish people to hold an all-Irish independence referendum. As I noted in my open letter to the Revolutionary Communist Group: ‘The wording on the ballot will read: ‘Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?’ No self-respecting socialist would give legitimacy to so rotten a geo-political entity as the United Kingdom. Socialists who support the ‘right’ of the British to vote on behalf of the Irish are social-chauvinists of the worst kind. So far, however, British left groups seem not to have noticed (or if they have noticed, seem not to care) that the forthcoming European referendum will have a decidedly colonial character.’ (See ‘Dear Michael MacGregor’ at http://www.rosclarb.uk )
